When adults start thinking about getting their teeth straightened, they soon discover it’s not as simple as just picking one type of orthodontic treatment. The whole world of clear and less-apparent ortho, everything from clear brackets to Invisalign, can get pretty complicated. Our patients often think that all clear orthodontic alternatives are pretty much the same, but then they start to notice the big differences in how each one works and what it can actually achieve.
Clear braces, or ceramic braces, are basically just like traditional metal braces but less noticeable. They’ve got tooth-colored or clear brackets that clip onto your teeth with some metal wire, so while they’re still attached to your teeth you can’t just take them off. An orthodontist will come in and adjust the wires from time to time to keep nudging your teeth into the right spot. Dental Fillings restore teeth affected by cavities or minor damage while preserving their natural structure. Modern Dental Fillings are durable, discreet, and designed to blend seamlessly with your teeth.
Translucent aligners work in a totally different way. You wear a series of clear plastic trays that you can put in and take out, and each set is designed specifically for you and your teeth. You’re usually wearing them for about 2 weeks at a time before you swap them for a new set. Patients can take their aligners out to eat, drink, brush their teeth or go to a special occasion, but they do need to be in for around 20 to 22 hours per day for it to work.
Clear braces and aligners work in pretty much opposite ways. Clear braces need regular visits so the wires can be adjusted and the brackets cleaned, which sometimes can be a bit painful for a few days after. With clear aligners, you only need to head back for a check-up every 6 to 8 weeks to get a new set and see how you’re getting on. People tend to find that aligners are a lot less painful because they’re moving your teeth slowly over time.
That being said, this treatment does rely on you sticking to it. If you’re using aligners, you need to be consistent in wearing them, because if you’re not, the whole thing just won’t work. Clear aligners also require a fair bit of maintenance, you have to clean them regularly so they don’t get stained and smelling bad. You can actually just take them out to brush and floss, which makes it a lot easier to keep your teeth healthy.
Clear braces, on the other hand, can be a bit more tricky to keep clean because of all the nooks and crannies where food and plaque can get stuck. And while clear aligners can fix some pretty basic problems, clear braces are really good for more complicated cases like severe crowding or major bite problems. The constant pressure of the wires lets you make more precise adjustments to your teeth when things get tricky.
When you’re trying to figure out whether you should go for clear braces or Invisalign, it really comes down to your individual needs and how you live your life. Some people love the ease of use and how they look, while others want to go with a more traditional approach. At Dentistry on the Pines, we help people figure out what’s best for them. It often comes down to weighing up the pros and cons of each option against what you need and want. Dental Hygiene plays a vital role in preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Regular Dental Hygiene appointments help maintain healthy teeth and gums year-round.
The one thing to keep in mind is that both clear braces and Invisalign can work wonders, as long as you choose the right one and get it done by a pro.
